The European Capital of Culture programme is fundamentally a project about delivering active, open and engaged communities.
During a period which has seen huge social changes have taken place, the EcoC programmes have evolved to reflect and respond to this change. From the original celebration of recognised cultural cities, followed by the culture-led regeneration models of Lille, Liverpool and Linz and on to models which reflect the need for smaller cities to develop as creative and cultural hubs, the EcoC project has mirrored, even driven developments in cities.

This has enabled cities to experiment and develop innovative ways to connect culture with positive social change. At its best, culture can shift from a “top down”, institutionally owned approach to one where it can be used to connect with and find solutions for some of the key issues which face our communities.

This workshop will be delivered in collaboration with a number of ECoC cities who are developing innovative models for the connection between their European Capital of Culture programmes and modern city living; exploring different models and sharing lessons learned.
