Milton Keynes has played a seminal role in the development of UK skateboarding culture, due in part to its unique New Town architecture and urban design. During the late 1980s and early '90s it was the skateboarding capital of the UK and is still the lead city for street skating, in 2004 it developed and opened Europe’s first skate plaza, The Buszy. MK Skate seeks to capture and tell this story through sharing memories, oral history, film and photography and through the exploration and archiving of personal collections.
Professor Iain Borden, whose recent book Skateboarding and the City presents the only complete history of the sport, exploring the story of skate culture from the surf-beaches of '60s California to the latest developments in street-skating today. Rigorously researched, Skateboarding and the City also reveals a vivid understanding of how skateboarders, through their actions, experience the city and its architecture in a unique way.
Iain Borden will be in conversation discussing his recent publication Skateboarding and the City and in particular the relationship between skateboarding and architecture.
